Team Coaching Made Easy with Belbin Profiles and Reports

Team Coaching with Sabre and Belbin

Belbin Team Roles elevate Team Coaching by unlocking a team’s potential with research- based tools and insights.

Team coaching is rapidly becoming a new tool within the of organisational development space. Unlike traditional coaching that focuses on individual growth, team coaching emphasises enhancing collective performance and synergy. The Belbin Team Role model, developed by Dr. Meredith Belbin, provides a powerful framework for this modality, offering profiles and reports that are invaluable for understanding and optimising team dynamics.

At the heart of the Belbin model is the concept of "Team Roles"—distinct behavioural patterns individuals exhibit when working within a group. These roles, including Resource Investigator, Coordinator, Shaper, and others, provide insights into how team members contribute, interact, and potentially clash. By identifying strengths and allowable weaknesses, the model fosters a rapid and shared understanding of individual contributions and how they fit within the team’s ecosystem.

For team coaches, the Belbin profiles and reports are indispensable. They offer detailed, evidence-based insights drawn from self-perception and peer feedback, making them uniquely suited for developing high-functioning teams. Coaches can use these reports to identify skill gaps, overlapping roles, and areas of underutilized potential. This clarity allows for tailored interventions, such as redistributing responsibilities or nurturing underdeveloped roles to create a more balanced and effective team.

The Belbin framework aligns seamlessly with the core principles of team coaching: collaboration, inclusivity, and shared responsibility. By emphasizing the importance of diverse contributions, the model helps teams move away from hierarchical thinking and towards a culture of mutual respect and adaptability. Team members gain a clearer understanding of their own roles and how they complement others, reducing conflict and improving communication.

The model is also forward-looking, providing actionable insights for sustainable team development. For example, coaches can use Belbin reports to help guide a team around integrating new members, recruitment, succession planning, and strategic restructuring. This future-oriented approach ensures that teams remain resilient and effective in a fast-changing work environment.

In the evolving field of team coaching, tools that offer depth, flexibility, and practical application are essential. The Belbin Team Role model not only equips teams with the knowledge to thrive but also empowers them to co-create solutions, making it an ideal partner for this dynamic and impactful coaching modality.

We are also delighted to work in partnership with Elena Hinova-McNamee and Thriving Leadership in this field.  She is a recognised expert in team Coaching and is also a faculty member on Belbin’s Team Coaching Certification programmes. She is available as a consultant and Team Coach.
